PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release - June
1998
Thermal Technology recently delivered a large Astro Group
1700 Automatic Vacuum Furnace to Bharat Electronics Ltd. in Bangalore, India.
Thermal Technology welcomed
the opportunity to work with Bharat Electronics to meet their high vacuum brazing
requirements in the manufacture of their vacuum interrupters. Bharat Electronics Ltd.
manufactures vacuum interrupters as well as many other electronic products.
Bharat requires the furnace to operate continuously at 1100° C ± 5 in a high vacuum atmosphere (10-7 torr). To meet
this need Thermal Technology supplied a model AVF-2460-MS furnace system. The
AVF-2460-MS is a bell-jar type furnace with the main heating element measuring 24 inches
in diameter by 64 inches high, yielding a work zone 20 inches in diameter by 54 inches
high. The heating element is fabricated from molybdenum sheet and provides approximately
3700 square inches of radiating surface area facing the work. Trim heaters, manufactured
of molybdenum stock, are installed at each end of the work zone to provide a high degree
of temperature uniformity within the work zone. |

The high vacuum is achieved with a turbomolecular pump and a cryo pump (ultimate vacuum
level of 10-8 torr). These types of furnaces can also be configured to operate
in inert gas and reducing atmospheres. Similar systems to the one shipped to Bharat
Electronics have been successfully applied to other processes such as cofiring of
metallized ceramic products and sintering of metals and ceramics. They have been supplied
for use at temperatures up to 2500° C and are in production
and research and development facilities around the world.
Furnace and process
control are handled via Honeywell Model 9100E controller/programmer with a Honeywell
microprocessor- based, multi-loop work station. This control system allows for fully
automatic process control and unattended operation.
